But the movie (if I remember correctly) showed the black hole opening up again at a different location as well as time, though I could be wrong about the location. If the black hole had stayed open that would make sense, but from what I remember it was a different opening.

"But the problem with alternate timelines is that they are just that: alternate. They branch out from their point of origin taking with them the element that created the alternate timeline (in this case Nero). The sticking point for me with this is that future-Spock travels to this timeline from the original at a later time. Nero arrived in 2233, creating the alternate timeline; future-Spock arrives in the alternate timeline in 2258. The question is how? If you go to Star Trek Online, you can see a nice illustration showing the branching and when Spock arrives. But the problem is that Future-Spock didn’t just travel in time, he traveled between timelines. "

Technically he didn't travel between time lines because they both entered the black hole at the same time and its end was connected to the alternate time line that was created by Nero exiting first. Spock was in the "tunnel" or black hole already so the exit point which became Nero's time line for the sake of argument was still at the end of his "tunnel" he just appeared further down the line.

As far as I coded up bookmarking, no this wasn't a feature. It's a cool idea and similar to what Apple has done with their iPod/iPhone chapter skip. Your best best is it post to re Rockbox mailing list to see if anyone built the feature after bookmarking was integrated into the core.

Hi Ben, Came across your post a couple of days ago. I have a comment/question about bookmarks. I have not yet installed Rockbox, but I'm about to. I have searched the Rockbox.org site and I'm impressed with the bookmarking support -- it has lots of things I've always wanted. Thanks for your work on it. Since you are interested in bookmarking, I thought I'd run this by you. As far as I can tell, Rockbox does not support the following:

When you click "Next", the current position will jump to either the next bookmark, or the next file, whichever comes first.

I had this in a simple player some years ago, and I can assure you that after you have used it, it's a must-have. It's a super-simple way of finding a bookmark, even in the dark, which otherwise can be rather cumbersome. One way in which audiobooks are lacking compared to traditional books is that it is very inconvenient to go back to listen again to something you need to clarify, and then to find your way back to your current place. With the stop-at-bookmark feature, you click once to set a bookmark, then merrily rewind until you have re-heard the other three variants of the Russian count's name. When satisfied, you just click "Next" as needed and you are back to your spot.

The Olympus Digital Voice Recorders that also function as mp3 players behave in this way -- evidence that if you are serious about navigating through audio, this is useful. Unfortunately those players put an "Index Mark" only in their own format files, and not in mp3's.

Can you tell me if the Rockbox bookmarking does this, perhaps by some setting I did not read about? Thanks for any help. G

Sad to see that the Space Center hasn't improved their security in the 3 years since I've been there. While the Center may not be a prime target for terrorist attacks, the security "theater" (as you aptly put in your post) is a bad imitation of good practices. It falls more in the category of "feeling safe" instead "being safe". I glad you took ownership and contacted the Center. For some reason it never occurred to me to do so and it's way too late to offer suggestions as their procedures may have changed. On the plus side I still have my Fisher Space Pen with the Space Center logo. It finally ran out of ink last week :-).

For the longest time the two great powers of the world were the USSR and the USA. Both had the capability of savaging the world over a dozen times. The Cold War between them was intense and almost brought the world down. Then the USSR collapse as a result of the economic problems, leaving the USA the "winner". This made us think that we were the best (survival of the fittest, so to speak). And the US still has huge economic and military might regardless of the problems that are starting to appear. As a result, we tend to believe that we are special. To be an American is a badge of honor for a vast number of people in the US. Unfortunately this honor implies special-ness, that we earned our spot as Americans. In reality, we were born in to it. It was our parents before us that made America the powerhouse that it is. Now their children are living on the remains of makings.

This isn't a unique feature of America, it's a feature of the privileged. The Romans experienced it and so did the English. It takes on great opportunity to propel a generation (or set of generations) to greatness and after that, it's a slow wearing away of the opportunity created. It is like a person making a million dollars. They live well. Their children live slightly less well. And children less so and so on until the money, the power, is gone. They may think they are "better", but they aren't. They are just lucky.

As for the problem of city-dwellers not even being aware of urban areas, or Americans not knowing about Sydney, that’s just human nature. We are limited in our perceptions, so we focus on what is around us.

I think in general, the population of America is just ignorant, and this shows them to be arrogant. I have recently moved to Sydney Australia from Adelaide Australia (most Americans I talk to have heard of neither and the ones that have heard of Sydney think it is our capitol... Well it's not!). I see some of the same problems in Sydney. The citizens here are just oblivious to the other cities within Australia. (Sydney is far and away our largest city). The funny think is, The achievements in science, sport and schools of our smaller cities out weigh those of Sydney... How, and where do Americans get this notion that they are the greatest nation on the planet when inn most fields of science / technology other countries are by far and away the leaders! Is it the way they are brought up? What is it?
