It’s as much a religious argument as anything and people confuse that with facts. The fact is that without Microsoft, computers would not be where they are today. When Windows 95 came out, Linux was barely runnable by geeks and hackers, much less the average consumer. As a result of Windows 95 and subsequent OSs have made computers available to the masses. Of course, where we go in the future is still up for debate.
